The owner of a Des Moines coin shop says the man suspected of stealing a coin last month worth more than $8,000 was caught Friday afternoon when he returned to the store.
The man, who was not named, walked into Christopher’s Rare Coins and asked to see some of the shop’s pricier coins, said owner Chris Seuntjens in a news release.
Employees recognized the man but couldn’t stop him before he left.
A manager and security guard chased the man on foot and eventually caught him.
According to the news release, Des Moines police took the suspect into custody, though police had not yet released a report on the incident as of Friday night.
The coin, an 1800 silver dollar, was stolen Feb. 2 from the shop on Merle Hay Road in northwest Des Moines.
According to police reports, a man was looking a tray of coins and stacked two on the counter so it looked like there was only one coin. When an employee walked away to check the price of another coin the man pocketed one of the stacked coins and left before anyone noticed it missing.
Police released a surveillance camera image of the man.
