According to the police log, officers were called to Walmart on Otis Street at just before 6 p.m. Sunday for a report that a flare gun went off and damaged the floor.
Sgt. Joseph Galvin said employees said a man in his 40s opened a package containing the flare gun and fired it. No one was hurt.
Employees asked the man why he shot the flare, and he told them he “wanted to see if it worked,” Galvin said.
As employees were cleaning up the mess – including some paper towels that were charred by the flare – the man left the store, Galvin said.
If found, he could face charges for destruction of property, Galvin said. Police are taking a look at surveillance video from the store to see if he can be identified.
