The saying goes that you never really know  someone properly until you’ve lived with them.

And anyone who has ever set up home in shared  accommodation or a communal apartment block will understand how frustrating  living with others can be.

While it can sometimes be tough to iron out  the irritating habits of a flatmate without causing a rift or a row, sometimes  you’ve just got to get your frustrations off your chest.

Rebuttal: This student didn’t take too kindly to being  asked not to slam doors late at night or early in the morning

A series of hilarious passive-aggressive  notes, believed to be from America, show one way to get the message  across.

Be it leaving the butter out or not  cleaning  up after yourself, these notes show exactly the sort of  behaviour that won’t  exactly endear you to your housemates.

While some keep it short and sweet,  writing  on the left behind toilet paper holder when it’s run out, others get a little  more creative.

One disgruntled housemate took  inspiration  from the type of motivational photo messages which adorn  offices and workplaces  across the world in a bid to get his housemate to do the dishes.

Another decided to use their burnt toast to  warn a housemate to stop turning the toaster up.

Food wars: This housemate hit back at suggestions that  he keeps spoiling the butter

Some are just polite notes to ensure  that  your roomies are not surprised by what they find in the fridge or  lying on the  bathroom floor.

But don’t always expect a positive response  if you leave a note.

As some of these pictures show, your message  might not be taken too kindly.

One post asking students to show some  consideration when closing doors late at night is met with a less than  polite  response, while one housemate’s extreme attempts to stop others  using their  salad dressing backfires.
