HALF of Britons suffer from phobias — but a quarter are too embarrassed to seek help, a study shows.
Of 2,000 adults surveyed by TV’s This Morning, a third are scared of heights and almost one in five fear the dentist.
Experts Nik and Eva Speakman, who will appear on the ITV show’s Phobia Week, said: “Many people feel isolated and embarrassed by a phobia.
“Many people therefore hide their fear, and adapt their lives to accommodate a phobia.”
One in seven are afraid of flying and around ten per cent terrified of spiders. One in ten claimed the phobia had affected their love life, while seven per cent said it had cost them their job.
The couple hope their appearance will lead to more sympathy and understanding.
Nik added: “People are suffering with the belief they can never overcome their extreme fears.
“We believe all phobias can be treated.”
