urine-specimen-cupNEWTOWN — Authorities are seeking to determine whether criminal charges  should be brought against a Newtown man they say stored as much as 300 gallons  of human urine in his home.

The man, whose name has not been released because he has not been charged,  has spoken with state and local environmental officials, according to Department  of Energy and Environmental Protection spokesman Dennis  Schain.

When DEEP investigators, at the behest of local health officials, searched  the house on Berkshire Road they found “200 to 300 one-gallon plastic jugs”  filled with urine, Schain said.

The average person produces about six cups of urine a day.

The single-family home, he said, was “in a state of disrepair.”

“An environmental contractor … was brought into help deal with this under  our supervision,” Schain said by telephone Monday.

He said it was unlikely that charges would be filed against the homeowner,  although authorities have not entirely ruled out the possibility.

The urine was sent to be treated at a sewage-treatment plant.
