Halloween is still months away, and these kids in watermelon costumes aren’t going to knock on your door for tricks or treats anytime soon.
So what drives some Chinese parents to have their kids put on improvised suits made from watermelon skin?
It’s all about beating the summer heat.
State-run news agency Xinhua reported the trend to have started in July in Wenzhou city, as photos of a young kid donning a watermelon outfit went online. Others eventually followed suit.
Today, photos of children showing off different styles and cuts of their “organic” getups caught much attention on Chinese social networking site Weibo, even making it to TV news.
However, for some dermatologists, this bizarre idea raises concerns, pointing out allergies and irritations when skin comes in contact with the pulp for too long.
We’re not really sure how these kids actually feel about their new outfits. Maybe parents should wear them too?
