News10NBC’s affiliate, WSTM, is reporting that a village judge in Waterloo has been hospitalized at Strong Memorial Hospital since Friday after he was attacked outside the Village Hall.
According Waterloo Judge Dean Mattoon, Judge Roger W. Barto was attacked as he was locking up the building at 10:00 p.m. Friday night. Mattoon says Barto had just completed an arraignment, but he does not feel the assault was related to the arraignment.
Mattoon says Judge Barto was struck on the head from behind with the lid of a toilet tank that had been placed outside the building during renovations. Mattoon says Barto was also choked by his assailant.
Judge Barto is currently in guarded condition at Strong Memorial Hospital.
The Waterloo Police Department is working with the New York State Police on the investigation. Mattoon says he believes the Seneca County District Attorney’s Office is also involved. Mattoon says that to his knowledge there have been no arrests.
The Waterloo Police Department would neither confirm nor deny the incident to our affilate.
