The big question is, if you’re going to have a tipple or several too many, what’s the best and quickest way to recover? We’ve all got hangover cures that we swear by, but do any of them actually work?
Well, a guy in the US set out to answer that question. Just as the Super Size Me guy Morgan Spurlock ate Macca’s for a month, turning himself into a human guinea pig in the name of food science, a man called Sam Matthews decided to get drunk five nights in a row to discover the ultimate hangover cure.

You’ll have to wait a minute. First, the stuff that didn’t work.
Hair of the dog – or drinking yet more – did not work. As a nurse told him: “It’s not advisable at all; ultimately it will only delay your hangover, it will increase the alcohol toxicity and make your dehydration worse.”
Scratch that one, then.
Eating greasy food failed too. Dude bought himself a $10 Philly cheesesteak sub, which is basically the equivalent of about three Big Macs squished together without the lettuce or anything even vaguely resembling a vegetable. The result?
As the nurse said: “Alcohol affects your stomach and can irritate it. The next morning when you eat greasy foods they will only irritate your stomach more.”
The bacon industry could be devastated by this news.
Caffeine pills worked a bit. But only a bit.
But you know what really worked? An IV drip. That’s right, Matthews called in a doctor, paying $250 for the privilege, and said he felt better than if he hadn’t drunk a thing.
Which is all very well but who’s got $250 and the time to hook themselves up to a drip every time they have a few too many beers?
