Waterloo officers tasered a man after he stabbed a dog Wednesday morning, according to police.
According to court records, Michael Jan Menton, 38, was involved in an argument with a woman at 1202 Williston Ave. around 6:25 a.m. when the woman’s 17-year-old daughter entered the room. Menton grabbed the girl’s wrist and shoved her several times.
The girl slapped his hands away, and Menton came at her again, but Menton’s dog then came to her aid, biting his wrist to disrupt the attack, court records state.
Menton then chased the dog into a corner, “kicking and punching it repeatedly and stomping its head,” according to an officer’s written account. The girl took the dog outside, and Menton followed, telling the dog “You make me bleed, I make you bleed,” records state.
He stabbed the dog three or four times as the dog tried to flee, records state. It wasn’t clear if the dog survived.
Police arrived a short time later, and Menton ignored commands to show his hands and pulled away from an officer. The officer suspected Menton was still armed with the knife and fired a Taser into his back. He was handcuffed and taken to jail after refusing a breath test.
Menton was arrested for public intoxication, animal torture, interference and simple assault. His bond was set at $5,600.
